What Makes SmulSkulz Unique?
Physical Mosaics: Each mosaic features 3,204 hand-set, semi-transparent acrylic tiles that evoke an early 8-bit computer art aesthetic. These mosaics capture pristine animation frames —before any compression or glitching occurs—transforming untouched digital imagery into tactile artifacts.
Digital Animations: The animations emphasize impermanence through glitch techniques like datamoshing, unravelling the image’s pixels in non-linear ways that reveal the fragile materiality of digital data. Hand-drawn 'boiled' linework adds a layer of humanity, deepening the reflection on digital media's transient nature.
Both the mosaic and the animation are essential halves of a unified work.
